Yankees Player Taken Away in Ambulance

Oswaldo Cabrera

New York Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera was taken off in an ambulance in the team’s May 12 game against the Seattle Mariners after sustaining a leg injury.

Cabrera was sliding home in the ninth inning, trying to take advantage of Aaron Judge’s sacrifice fly. However, he injured his left ankle in the process, and trainers from both teams rushed out to help him. A towel was placed over the injury, and they ultimately put his ankle in a brace before he was put on a stretcher.

He was taken to a hospital with team athletic trainer Tim Lentych

As of 2:45 p.m. on May 13, there has been no update about his injury.

Yankees Manager Aaron Boone Calls Oswaldo Cabrera’s Injury a ‘Pretty Serious Situation’

After the game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone spoke with reporters, giving an update on Cabrera.

“I think everyone understands it was a pretty serious situation,” Boone said (via the Associated Press). “So, just praying for our guy Cabby tonight and hoping for the best. Trust that he’s in good hands as he goes through the night here.”

Outfielder Aaron Judge also revealed what Cabrera asked him before he was taken away in the ambulance.

“Right before he got carted off, he just called me over and said, ‘Hey, did I score?’” Judge said. “So, just kind of shows you what type of guy he is. Something like that happens and the one thing on his mind for all the pain and everything is, ‘Did I score?’”

Judge’s answer: yes.

“So that made him smile,” Boone said. “But he was in some pain, obviously.”

Yankees Teammates Praise Oswaldo Cabrera

The Athletic described the Yankees’ clubhouse as “somber” after the team’s win due to Cabrera’s injury. And his teammates took a moment to speak with the outlet about his impact on and off the field.

“He cares for everybody in this room. He loves being a Yankee,” Judge said. “He wears his jersey with pride. This is a tough one, especially a guy that’s grinded his whole life and finally got an opportunity to be our everyday guy and been excelling at it.”

Outfielder Trent Grisham echoed those sentiments.

“He’s one of the best human beings in the clubhouse,” Grisham stated. “It stings. It hurts a lot to see somebody that’s one of the best of us go down like that.”

“The way he does everything,” he added. “The way he shows up with a smile. The way he leaves it all out there. The way that he cares for other people. It just pours out of him. You watch him play baseball, you get a taste of it. But when you get to know him, it’s so much deeper than that.”

Starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt completely agreed.

“As soon as you say his name,” Schmidt explained, “I think of his kind spirit and who he is as a teammate, trying to uplift guys and always bring positive energy and always has a smile on his face.”
