A major characterâs story has come to an emotional end on “Marshals” just weeks before the showâs season 1 finale.
During the May 10 episode of the “Yellowstone” spinoff, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and Cal learned that their former Navy SEAL teammate Garrett, played by Riley Green, died from injuries sustained in a fire.
As Garrettâs doctor explained, âThe damage from the fire meant he wasn’t getting enough oxygen into his body. The strain of it all was too much on his heart.â
Kayce and Cal stood beside Garrettâs empty hospital bed in shock after learning the news.
Kayce later noticed Garrettâs phone background featured a photo from their time serving together in Afghanistan.
âThey’re brothers forever,â Cal said.
âThe best of us don’t come home,â Kayce responded.
The death marked another devastating moment for the former SEAL teammates, particularly after Cal finally revealed the truth about a long-buried mission failure that had haunted their group for years.
âMarshalsâ Reveals Calâs Secret About Ronerâs Death
Earlier in the episode, Cal admitted to Kayce that Garrett had mistakenly declared teammate Roner, played by Jay Reeves, dead during a mission in Afghanistan.
The incorrect information led Cal to order a retreat, leaving Kayce to believe for years that Cal had abandoned Roner during the operation.
Cal explained that he allowed the others to blame him to protect Garrett.
âI just thought burying the truth was best for double G, but maybe digging it up gives us three a chance to move forward,â Cal told Kayce.
Any hope of reconciliation quickly disappeared after Garrett died from his injuries later in the episode.
The emotional installment arrives just ahead of the season 1 finale, which is already generating significant buzz after CBS renewed the series for season 2.
According to Nielsen viewership data cited by TV Insider, âMarshalsâ has become the most-watched television series of 2026 behind only “Stranger Things.”
âMarshalsâ Cast Teases Intense Season 1 Finale
Ahead of the finale, several cast members spoke with TV Insider during CBS Fest on April 15 and teased major developments still to come.
The finale episode, titled âWolves at the Door,â will air on May 24.
According to the official logline, âAfter an assassination attempt against Broken Rock chairman Rainwater, Kayce protects him while the Marshals race to discover whoâs targeting him. When a militia attacks, Kayce realizes the conspiracy is larger than anyone imagined.â
Grimes hinted that more familiar faces from âYellowstoneâ could appear in the future.
âThereâs probably a good chance,â Grimes said when asked whether additional stars from the original series could appear on âMarshals.â
Meanwhile, Ash Santos teased that viewers should prepare for a dramatic ending.
âThe finale is beautifully written. Thereâs a really intense cliffhanger that we end on,â Santos told TV Insider.
Santos plays Andrea, a member of Calâs team alongside Belle, played by Arielle Kebbel, and Miles, played by Tatanka Means.
Throughout season 1, Andrea developed a close bond with Kayce after the pair connected over losing their fathers in traumatic circumstances.
âIn terms of Andrea, her journey through âMarshals,â I feel like season 1 wraps it in a beautiful way,â Santos said. âSheâs almost the complete opposite. How we met her is how we leave her.â
Logan Marshall-Green Hints More Secrets Are Coming in Season 2
Logan Marshall-Green also revealed that Calâs storyline is far from over.
âThereâs another big secret that Cal has to digest, and eventually thatâll come out,â Marshall-Green said. âHeâs got a lot on his plate.â
Both actors joked that their biggest hope for season 2 is survival.
âThat we survive,â Santos teased.
âJust donât kill me off,â Marshall-Green added.
CBS has already moved âMarshalsâ to a fall premiere schedule for season 2 after the series originally debuted as a midseason show during its first season.
