Zoe Saldana wants the 00s sequel we’ve all been waiting for – with one condition

Zoe Saldana has renewed hopes for a sequel to the beloved teen road trip movie Crossroads after expressing her enthusiasm to reunite with co-star Britney Spears.

The Marvel star, 46, starred as popular girl Kit who embarks on a life-changing journey with old friends, Mimi (Taryn Manning) and Lucy (Britney), after high school graduation.

The Shonda Rhimes movie, which came out in 2002, initially had a mixed reception but has since been hailed a coming-of-age classic with its raw depiction of three Georgian teens on the cusp of adulthood.

All perfectly encapsulated by the film’s slogan: ‘Dreams change, friends last forever’. It also stars Anson Mount and Kim Cattrall.

Now, in an era of endless reboots and surprise sequels (Freaky Friday, Princess Diaries, Happy Gilmore, I Know What You Did Last Summer…), there is plenty of cultural appetite for a check-in with our dynamic trio over two decades on.

And Zoe is in full agreement.

During a game of Know Their Lines with Variety, the Hollywood star addressed whether she would be keen for a second go-around.

‘Why not?’ she said.

‘But I feel like it would only work if Britney comes back and plays her character again. And Taryn Manning does as well, and Anson Mount. And that we write realistic sort of scenarios for them. That would be beautiful.’

In fact, the Avatar actor had nothing but praise for Britney, who left her a bit starstruck on set.

She recalled: ‘It was so fun, but it was also, like, the first time that I was around a big pop star. And she was just so sought after, and yet, she was so down to earth and kind and approachable.’

The entire production, which was female-heavy, was inspiring for Zoe who was still in the infancy of her career.

‘Producers, the filmmaker, casting director, the cast — being around an all-woman world gave me just a nice little kick. I was like, “Oh, I wanna be like this all the time”.’

What’s more, she shared her joy at seeing sequels for films across genres and time periods.

She explained: ‘We’ve been living the last 20 years in the world of sequels. Usually, you thought that sequels were only for action movies or superhero movies, and now, sequels can live in all kinds of genres.’

Whether Zoe’s wishes come true remains to be seen, especially considering Britney’s tumultuous experience filming Crossroads. It marked the first and last movie she starred in (although she famously almost clinched the lead role in 2004 romance The Notebook).

In her 2023 memoir, The Woman In Me, she explained why.

‘That was pretty much the beginning and end of my acting career, and I was relieved,’ she wrote in the book.

The Toxic hitmaker continued: ‘My problem wasn’t with anyone involved in the production but with what acting did to my mind.

‘I didn’t know how to break out of my character. I really became this other person. Some people do Method acting, but they’re usually aware of the fact that they’re doing it. But I didn’t have any separation at all.’

As for Zoe, her career has gone from strength to strength since her Crossroads days and she most recently appeared in the acclaimed film Emilia Perez opposite Selena Gomez.

There is Oscars buzz for her role as high-powered lawyer Rita, to which she told Variety: ‘Whatever the outcome, I want to make sure that it doesn’t take away the fact that Emilia Pérez was impactful in my life.

‘It gave me a lot, and I gave a lot for it. If I get the recognition, it would be a dream come true, but I’m taking it day by day.’

Crossroads is available to stream on Netflix.
