14-year-old charged in March Streeterville shooting of 15-year-old boy

A 14-year-old boy is accused of shooting a 15-year-old boy last month amid a large gathering of kids in Streeterville.

The boy, who wasn’t identified because he is underage, was cited in a juvenile petition with aggravated battery, reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a handgun, according to Chicago police. He was arrested Monday afternoon in the Douglas neighborhood.

Among a crowd of kids downtown on March 28, the boy allegedly fired a gun around 9:40 p.m. near North Water Street and Cityfront Plaza Drive, police said. The 15-year-old boy was grazed by a bullet on his leg. Officers found him on a sidewalk near Columbus Street, police said at the time.

After the boy fired the weapon, dozens of teens fled from the area, officers said at the time. Social media videos showed upward of 100 people running from the scene.

Following the shooting, the guardian of the 15-year-old boy told the Sun-Times she wishes the city would do more to manage the groups of children or teens who converge on downtown. City council members and Streeterville residents called on the city to set a curfew downtown for unaccompanied minors.
