2 dead, 38 wounded in Memorial Day weekend shootings in Chicago

A toddler and man died, and at least 38 others were wounded, in Memorial Day weekend shootings in Chicago in the least deadly holiday weekend in 16 years.

Despite the fatalities — authorities said the one involving a toddler was an accidental suicide — more people were wounded over the holiday weekend than in 2025, when 25 people were shot in the city’s least violent Memorial Day weekend since 2010.

Still, gun violence remains lower than the pandemic-era peak. In 2021, during the same holiday period, the city saw 65 shooting victims, including 15 deaths.

Between 2022-2024, each year’s holiday weekend had between nine and 12 people shot and killed, according to city data. Each year’s total shooting victims ranged from nearly 40 to nearly 50.

The Sun-Times counted holiday weekend shootings between 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday.

The two deaths of this year’s holiday weekend came after toddler Jamonte Shaw, 2, shot himself Sunday, according to Chicago police. The boyfriend of the toddler’s mom, Johnny R. Hughes, 31, was charged with child endangerment.

Another shooting that turned fatal was listed as a death investigation. A 32-year-old man was found in a car fatally shot in his head in the 200 block of North Francisco about 11:25 a.m. Monday. A firearm was found at the scene, police said. The cause of his death was pending a police investigation, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

At least eight of those wounded were in two mass shootings in and Austin and Little Village.

A group of four people were standing outside around 11 p.m. Monday in the 4800 block of West Fulton Street in Austin when someone opened fire, police said. The victims — men ages 23, 27 and 35, and a 34-year-old woman — were all listed in good condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Around 3 a.m. Sunday, four teenagers were injured in a shooting in the 2500 block of South Washtenaw Avenue in Little Village, police said. Officers in the area heard gunshots and found the four victims in good condition: a boy, 14, two 16-year-old girls and a woman, 18.

About 15 minutes later, another shooting left multiple people injured in Little Village. Three people suffering from gunshot wounds arrived together at Mount Sinai around 3:15 a.m. A man, 29, was critically wounded. The other two victims, men ages 27 and 30, were each shot in their legs and were in fair condition. Police said the 30-year-old man was shot in the 2200 block of South Keeler Avenue but did not share details about the other victims.

Monday night, three teens were wounded in a shooting as hundreds of teens descended onto streets in Hyde Park. The teens, one 18-year-old man and two 19-year-old men, were wounded about 10 p.m. in the 1600 block of East 55th Street. They were hospitalized in good condition.

Around 6:20 p.m. Monday, a 47-year-old man was near the sidewalk in the 200 block of East 37th Street when he was battered and shot in his foot, authorities said. He was also robbed of his belongings. He went to Insight Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

At least 23 other people, including three teens, were wounded in shootings across Chicago over Memorial Day weekend.
