A man behind the wheel of a car that slammed into a fire hyrdrant causing two passengers to be fatally ejected and four others to be injured, was taken into custody late Sunday in Bronzeville, police said.
No charges have been announced for the 28-year-old driver, who was the only one uninjured in the 11:50 p.m. crash at 47th and State streets.
The names of the woman, 22, and the man, 25, who were ejected from the car when it plowed into the hydrant, have not been released, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. They died at the scene.
The 28-year-old man was driving a gray sedan east on 47th Street Sunday night when he lost control and hit a fire hydrant, police said.
One of his four injured passengers included a 21-year-old woman who was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, police said.
The others were a 26-year-old man who was in fair condition at Stroger Hospital; a 23-year-old woman in good condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center; and a 17-year-old girl, who was was treated and released at the scene in good condition, police said.
The driver was placed in custody, and charges are pending, police said.
The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
