5 dead, 22 hurt in weekend shootings, including 12 wounded in mass shooting

At least five people were killed and 22 others were injured in shootings across Chicago since Friday afternoon.

Among those injured, 12 people were wounded in a mass shooting in Roseland on the South Side. Chicago police said a large crowd had gathered in the 200 block of West 95th Street when a red SUV drove by and two people inside opened fire shortly after 11 p.m. Friday.

When officers arrived, they found a 32-year-old woman with two gunshot wounds to her back. She was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. A 44-year-old man suffered four graze wounds and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. They were in good condition, police said.

At least 11 others were also injured, with the victims ranging between 17 and 47 years old:

Mayor Brandon Johnson said the city is opening an emergency assistance center in the neighborhood where the shooting happened. Members of the city’s Crisis Assistance Response and Engagement program also will provide support and canvass the neighborhood Monday.

“What should have been a night of celebration and community reflection for Juneteenth was shattered by a horrific act of violence. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones,” Johnson said in a statement. “… Violence has no place in our city, and those responsible will be held accountable. As temperatures rise, please stay vigilant, check in on your neighbors, friends and family, and remind one another of the importance of de-escalation.”

Ald. Anthony Beale (9th) said in a statement he is “heartbroken by the senseless shooting.”

“In a matter of seconds, an ordinary summer night was shattered by gunfire. Lives were upended, families were thrown into fear, and an entire community was reminded how quickly violence can change everything,” Beale said. “No one should have to wonder if they or someone they love will make it home safely. This is the cruel reality of the mindless menace of gun violence in our city. It does not just wound those caught in its crossfires; it steals a measure of joy from every block it touches and chips away at the sense of security that binds communities together.”

Hours before the mass shooting, a man was standing on the sidewalk in the 11900 block of South Michigan Avenue when an SUV drove by and opened fire around 5:15 p.m. The man, 29, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the face and body and was taken to Roseland Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. A 70-year-old man who was nearby was also shot. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in stable condition.

A 33-year-old man was found shot to death around 8:55 p.m. in the 3700 block of West 30th Street in Little Village. He was shot several times and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

A man, 34, was found just before 10 p.m. in the 1100 block of West Latrobe Avenue in Austin with a gunshot wound to the chest, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Less than an hour later, officers found a 50-year-old man shot in the chest in the first block of West 75th Street in Grand Crossing. The man was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

A 37-year-old man was killed early Saturday in the 500 block of West 38th Street in Bridgeport. The man was found around 12:15 a.m. with a gunshot wound in the neck. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

At least 10 other people were wounded in shootings since 5 p.m. Friday.
