5 killed when SUV collides with train in Gary, Ind.

Five people died when the vehicle they were in collided with a train in Gary, Ind., Wednesday night, officials said.

A South Shore Line train was traveling eastbound near U.S. Highway 20 and 7th Avenue when a vehicle traveling southbound drove past the lowered crossing gates and into the path of the oncoming train about 10 p.m. Wednesday, the train line said in a statement.

The five victims — all of whom were inside the vehicle — haven’t been identified yet, the statement said.

No passengers or crew members on the train were injured.

The train company extended condolences to the loved ones of the victims and reminded people never to cross railroad tracks when signals are on and to always expect a train coming from either direction at any time.

South Shore Line trains were suspended following the crash but have since resumed.
