Here is a sampling of ceremonies and remembrances taking place on Sept. 11-12 in the Los Angeles area, memorializing the victims of the deadly terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Most observances are free and don’t require a reservation to attend. Check each listing.
However, Pepperdine University’s remembrance ceremony on Sept. 11 requires a registration in advance to attend. Also, the Long Beach 9/11 Ceremony and Stair Climb on Sept. 12 requires a registration and fee.
During this Labor Day weekend, a number of eye-catching displays have been put up in honor of the victims of 9/11. Also, see below the listings for a sampling of permanent 9/11 outdoor memorials to visit year-round.
Pepperdine University Waves of Flags: The display of American flags to honor and remember the 2,977 victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 — and also one national flag for each foreign country who lost citizens that day — is up from Sept. 5-18 (until volunteers lower the flags beginning at 10 a.m. Sept. 18). Shepherd Church 9/11 Memorial Walk Display: The 25th anniversary is remembered with 2,977 “flags” representing lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Each flag includes name, age, occupation, location on 9/11, and photograph (if available). SEPT. 11 Remember the Sky photo activity
Remember the Sky: The 9/11 Memorial and Museum in NYC asks the public to take a photo of the sky wherever you are on the morning of Sept. 11, 2026 — regardless of the weather — include a caption and post it early in the day to Instagram or the social media of your choice. The social media campaign is “inspired by the clear blue sky that was present in New York City and across the country on 9/11” and also artist’s Spencer Finch’s art installation in the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Long Beach 9/11 Stair Climb: The event is presented by the Long Beach Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 372. Ceremony, 8 a.m., followed by the stair climb. Hermosa Beach Sept. 11 Memorial: The memorial includes a piece of steel from the World Trade Center that is displayed between a sculpture of the two towers scaled to size. Also, a 9/11 Memorial Bench with unique buttons, collected by Kiwanis Builders Club students from Hermosa Valley School, that represents the lives lost on 9/11. Los Angeles Fire Department’s Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center: A display of a 23-ton and approximately 22-foot tall steel column that was originally part of the lobby structure at the south tower of the World Trade Center. Location, 1700 Stadium Way, Los Angeles.
Manhattan Beach Sept. 11 Memorial: The Manhattan Beach Fire Department received two steel beams from the World Trade Center. The beams are upright on a concrete platform where the words “We shall never forget” are inscribed. The memorial is located at Manhattan Beach Fire Department Station No. 1, 400 15th St. (at Valley Drive). The 9/11 Memorial at Los Angeles Fire Department Station 88 – Sherman Oaks: The Memorial Fountain in front of the station has a 750-pound piece from the destroyed World Trade Center and a 100-pound piece of limestone from the Pentagon. Location, 5101 Sepulveda Blvd., Sherman Oaks.
