A dog and fish tale earns Fish of the Week

Tim Barrett put a unique spin on Fish of the Week.

Or rather Goose, a 16-year-old Brittany, put her spin on it.

On the second day of spring trout season, Barrett caught his limit of five rainbow trout at Silver Springs State Fish and Wildlife Area. He suggested “Dog and Fish of the Week.”

“Goose has been going to the spring catchable trout opener at Silver Springs since 2009,” he emailed. “[She] loves to walk the many trails at the state park after fishing.”

Three trout were 15 inches, one 13 inches and one 11 inches. One came on a spinner, the others on large fatheads.

“We mainly go steelhead fishing,” Barrett said.

They planned to hit the St. Joseph River in Indiana on Tuesday. But, living in Brookfield, they also fish nearby Salt Creek and Des Plaines River.

FOTW, the celebration of big fish and their stories (the stories matter) around Chicago fishing, runs Wednesdays in the paper Sun-Times.
