A nonprofit surprises former homeless mom with furniture for Wilmington home

Los Angeles nonprofit Holliday’s Helping Hands Foundation put together a welcome surprise for Alejandra Espanta, a local mother of three, on Monday, Aug. 12. The organization helped Espanta, who was formerly homeless, set up her new apartment in Wilmington with furniture, decor and lots of warmth — all free of charge.

Katina Holliday, the nonprofit’s founder, said the moment she showed Espanta her newly-furnished apartment was one of “overwhelming joy.”

“One of my goals is to help people make a house into a home,” Holliday said. “It’s important to lend this help so someone can get a hand in life.”

Holliday founded the Holliday’s Helping Hands in 2018, with inspiration stemming from her grandmother, who “always would lend a hand” to the homeless. The organization now operates about 350 beds of interim housing, along with providing extra support for former clients who now live in permanent housing such as Espanta.

Some of the services offered by Holliday’s Helping Hands include therapy, group sessions, parenting classes and family reunification services.

“We help clients find a roadmap for their lives and support them in their journey to having a home,” Holliday said.

Espanta, who lived on the streets for eight years, now lives in stable housing and takes care of her three kids, who started school for the 2024-25 school year on Monday.
