A San Pedro beach closes due to 100,000-gallon sewage spill

Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro was closed on Christmas Eve after an approximately 100,000-gallon sewage spill, Los Angeles County officials said.

The spill originated from a manhole cover in Carson, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn said in a post on X.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health advised visitors to avoid ocean water and wet sand in the area for at least three-quarters of a mile upstream and downstream from the beach.

The beach remained closed as of Friday afternoon, Dec. 26, Hahn said in a follow-up post on X.

It was unclear when the beach would reopen.

The closure will remain in place until water samples show that bacteria levels meet health standards, the Department of Public Health said.

The county offers beach conditions on a recorded line: 1-800-525-5662.
