A31 CLOSED after serious crash with 12-mile stretch of road shut off for hours – as drivers forced to change route

THE A31 closed after a serious crash this morning – with a 12-mile stretch shut off for hours.

The westbound carriageway of the road was blocked off for “investigation work” following the collision in Hampshire.

Cops raced to the scene shortly after 3am, according to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.

Forensic vans also reportedly attended the crash.

The stretch of road between M27 J2 and the A338 was subsequently closed for seven hours – causing delays for drivers, who were forced to take a lengthy diversion.

One local told the Bournemouth Echo that they had “never seen anything like it”.

Peter Lovesey added: “There were lorries stuck in lay-bys, and loads of police and forensics vans.”

In a statement, National Highways wrote: “The A31 in Hampshire is closed westbound between the M27 Cadnam Interchange and the A338 near Ringwood.

“This is due to a serious collision being attended by Hampshire Police.

“National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene dealing with traffic management.”

The AA said: “Road closed due to crash investigation work on A31 Westbound from M27 J1 (Cadnam) to A338 Salisbury Road.”

National Highways later confirmed that the road had reopened at around 10.30am.

A post on X read: “Cleared. A31 westbound between M27 J2 and the A338 near Ringwood Hampshire.

“Road open. Following a serious collision and police investigation.

“Delays clearing well.”

Police have not confirmed how many vehicles were involved in the crash.
