Adams County jail nurse brought drugs into facility, investigators say

A nurse at the Adams County Detention Facility was arrested on suspicion of bringing narcotics into secure areas of the jail, sheriff’s officials said Friday.

Jail officials discovered drugs were brought into the facility in late April and later found a nurse employed by the jail’s contracted medical provider “was allegedly introducing contraband into the facility,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Ashley Ryan, 37, was fired from her position a few weeks into the investigation and was later arrested on suspicion of four felony drug charges related to introducing contraband and distributing a controlled substance.

She was arrested in Texas on July 9, court records show, and is awaiting extradition to Colorado.

A second woman, 35-year-old Shayleen Abeyta, faces the same charges after investigators say she gave Ryan the drugs. Abeyta was released on a $2,000 surety bond and is set to appear in court for an arraignment on Aug. 26, court records show.
