Airport shuttle driver at fault in fatal crash, Commerce City police say

The driver of an airport shuttle bus was at fault in a July crash that killed a shuttle passenger and injured 10 others near Denver International Airport, Commerce City police said Friday.

The police department is recommending that the driver be charged with careless driving causing death, careless driving causing injury and failure to yield, according to a police news release. No charges have yet been filed. The 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office will consider the case next.

The July 12 crash between a pickup truck and the shuttle bus happened at the intersection of Tower Road and East 81st Avenue, according to police. The shuttle bus, headed south on Tower Road, was waiting to make a left-hand turn on a flashing yellow arrow.

The shuttle driver, who The Denver Post is not identifying because he has not yet been charged, turned left in front of the pickup truck, which had the right of way, police said.

A 77-year-old man who was riding on the shuttle was killed in the resulting collision and 10 other passengers were injured, police said. The shuttle driver and a passenger in the pickup truck were hospitalized with serious injuries.

Commerce City police said their recommendation of criminal charges comes after  “an exhaustive investigation and crash reconstruction.”
