Aldi planning a South Loop location, records show

Aldi is setting up shop in a South Loop retail complex, according to a permit filed by the grocery chain.

A renovation and building permit for a space at the open-air mall Roosevelt Collection, 150 W. Roosevelt Road, was issued by the city of Chicago on Monday. Plans include an interior retrofit of the existing space, according to the permit.

The retail complex recently saw the opening of an AMC Roosevelt 16 movie theater. Other retailers and restaurants at the center include H&M, The X Pot and Old Navy.

“We are excited to confirm that we are making headway on a new store located at 150 W. Roosevelt Road, which is expected to open next year,” Heather McCarthy, Aldi’s regional vice president, said in a statement.

In February, the Batavia-based company announced plans to open 225 new locations this year. The stores projected to open in 2025 are partially the result of converting 220 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations into Aldi stores.

“Aldi continues to see more shoppers come through our doors as they experience our quicker, easier and more affordable shopping experience firsthand,” Aldi CEO Jason Hart said in a February news release. “With our expansion across the country, Aldi is earning the trust of more shoppers in more communities than ever before, bringing us closer to becoming America’s first stop for groceries.”

The new stores would amount to the most opened by the retailer since its first location in 1976, the release said.

Aldi opened nearly 120 stores in 2024, bringing its total locations nationwide to about 2,400. The company said in a statement Thursday that it’s nearing its goal to open 800 new stores nationwide by the end of 2028.

The grocer currently has 32 locations throughout Chicago.

A store in River North, at 30 W. Huron St., is expected to have a grand opening on Nov. 13. The company plans to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony and give the first 100 customers a gift bag with Aldi “fan favorites” and a gift card, according to the company.

A West Loop store at 1000 W. Jackson Boulevard is also expected to open in 2026, the Sun-Times previously reported.

The company also lists the reopening of a store in Chicago Ridge, 9640 Ridgeland Ave., in November. The store temporarily closed Sept. 28 for renovations.
