An allegedly intoxicated 25-year-old motorist was spotted pouring a bottle of liquid into Lake Michigan after plowing into a motorcycle, killing the woman driving it earlier this week in the Loop, a Chicago traffic crash report said.
The Chicago woman, who is not being identified because no charges have been filed, was behind the wheel of a Ford Fusion driving south at a high rate of speed in the 400 block of South DuSable Lake Shore Drive when witnesses saw her rear-end the motorcycle about 11 p.m. Wednesday, knocking the 49-year-old Addison woman off it and leaving her lying in the street, according to the report.
After the collision, the Ford — with the motorcycle lodged underneath it — burst into flames, jumped the median and ended up facing northbound traffic in the 500 block of South DuSable Lake Shore Drive, according to the report.
As an off-duty Chicago police officer rushed to render aid to the 49-year-old woman, a witness saw the motorist holding what appeared to be a glass bottle jump out of the car and “run to the lake and pour it into the lake” before returning to her car, according to the report.
The still-unidentified Addison motorcyclist was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 11:52 p.m. A Friday autopsy determined she died of multiple injuries from the crash and her death was ruled an accident, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The driver, who was arrested at the scene, submitted to a breath analysis test, which determined her blood-alcohol was .10, more than .08, which is the legal limit, according to the report.
The Police Major Accident Investigation Unit is probing the wreck.
