American Airlines flights grounded nationwide for tech issue

A “technology issue” grounded American Airlines flights across the country on Tuesday, according to the company.

It was unclear how many flights at Chicago’s airports were impacted, with average delays sitting around a half hour. A ground stop was temporarily issued by the Federal Aviation Administration just for the airline.

“Systems are coming back online now and flights are departing again,” the company said on social media. “We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”

At O’Hare Airport, more than 1,000 flights had been canceled in the last 24 hours — with nearly 600 facing more than 45 minutes of delays — while 267 had been canceled. At Midway, 222 flights were delayed, the majority of which being less than half an hour, with 13 total cancellations.
