A 12-year-old boy died Saturday after he was hit by a distracted driver in an Aurora crosswalk, police said.
The boy was riding his scooter across East Iliff Avenue near South Wheel Park Circle, south of Horseshoe Park, when he was hit by a 19-year-old driver, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.
Police said the 12-year-old was in a marked crosswalk and had activated the crossing signal, which stops all traffic on Iliff. The 19-year-old driver wasn’t paying attention and didn’t stop for the signal, police said.
Paramedics took the boy to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police said in an 8:15 p.m. update.
The 19-year-old driver was not publicly identified, but Aurora officials expect charges to be filed against the driver “in the near future.”
“This tragic incident serves as an important reminder to all drivers: put your phones down, avoid distractions while driving and stay focused on the road,” police stated in the news release. “Your life, and the lives of others, depend on it.”
Investigators spent Saturday evening reconstructing the crash scene “to determine all factors leading up to the crash.”
Police did not say if speed or alcohol were believed to be factors.
