Authorities identify four-year-old boy killed in Burlingame collision

BURLINGAME — The four-year-old boy who died last week after being struck by a vehicle in downtown Burlingame has been identified as Ayden Fang of Burlingame, according to the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office.

The boy died after a driver crashed her vehicle into the sidewalk in front of a restaurant just before 6:30 p.m. Friday, police said. The collision also injured a 6-year-old girl.

The 19-year-old female driver had been pulling out of a city parking lot when she pulled directly into the path of an e-bike driven by an 11-year-old boy with a 10-year-old female passenger, said David Perna, public information officer and investigations division lieutenant for the Burlingame Police Department. The e-bike, which had the right of way as it traveled eastbound on Donnelly Street, collided with the driver’s side of the vehicle.

After the collision with the e-bike, the driver of the vehicle accelerated across Donnelly Street, Perna said. The driver struck the two children and then the building housing the restaurant, Truffle Poké Bar. The children had been on the sidewalk area at the entryway of the restaurant, which had large accordion-style windows that were open at the time, Perna added.

The boy died at the scene of major injuries and the girl was taken to a hospital. The girl’s injuries are believed to be non-life threatening, Perna said.

Perna added that the damage to the restaurant was “significant.”

The children riding the e-bike did not immediately report any injuries, Perna said. Officials said the Class 2 e-bike, a model from 101 Bike, had a maximum speed of 20 mph.

No arrests were made, Perna added. Police do not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
