Gavin Brindley has made quite an impression with the Colorado Avalanche.
He’s turned a great training camp and strong start to his rookie season into a two-year contract extension, the club announced Tuesday morning.
The average annual value of the deal is $875,000, according to a team source. It’s a two-way deal at $850,000 for 2026-27 and a one-way deal at $900,000 for 2027-28. Brindley would have been a restricted free agent after this season.
Focus, consistency, good health: Why the Avalanche is the best team in the NHL right now
Brindley, 21, has three goals and five points in 14 games for the Avs this season. He made the team with a strong training camp and has been a fixture in the lineup when healthy. He’s played primarily on the fourth line, but also earned time on both special teams units.
Colorado acquired Brindley in a trade this past summer that sent Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood to the Columbus Blue Jackets. It was viewed primarily as a move to create more salary cap flexibility, but Brindley has been a pleasant surprise for the Avalanche after a tough first pro season with the Blue Jackets’ AHL franchise.
Brindley was the No. 34 pick in the 2023 NHL draft by the Blue Jackets. He was the Big Ten player of the year as a sophomore.
