SAN FRANCISCO — On a day BART smoothly rolled out a new way for passengers to pay, its ability to transport them was far bumpier.
The transit system’s Red Line shut down and remained that way past 2 p.m., according to the agency. The line runs between Richmond through the San Francisco Airport and into Millbrae.
BART did not say why the line was down, but a power issue earlier Wednesday caused a major delay on all lines heading to San Francisco in the SFO, Millbrae, Daly City and East Bay directions and that also was affecting the system past 2 p.m. That power issue happened between the 24th Street Mission and Glen Park stations.
BART told Red Line passengers traveling from Richmond to board an Orange Line train going to the Berryessa station in San Jose, then transfer at MacArthur station to a Yellow Line SFO/Millbrae train. Passengers traveling from Millbrae or SFO were told to board a Yellow Line train toward Antioch and transfer at 19th Street station to an Orange Line train toward Richmond.
Officials did not say when full service on the system was expected.
