Bears activate DE Austin Booker, work out 7 players

The Bears activated Austin Booker from injured reserve to the active roster Tuesday, as expected, and shut down fellow defensive end Shemar Turner for the season. Turner tore the ACL in his knee Sunday, while Booker, who led the Bears with four preseason sacks, hasn’t played all season because of his own knee injury.

The Bears also tried out seven players, mostly offensive linemen, as they look to fill one more open spot on their 53-man roster. Tackles Jackson Barton and Andrew Stueber, guard Royce Newman and center Jake Hanson worked out for the team, as did linebacker D.J. Johnson, defensive end Jeremiah Martin and linebacker Rashad Weaver.

Barton has appeared in 13 games over four years with the Cardinals and Raiders, while Stueber played seven games for the Bengals last year. The Bears are in the market for additional tackle depth after putting Braxton Jones on IR on Saturday.

After the Bears had penalty issues again Sunday, coach Ben Johnson all but threw his hands up and put the onus on his players and presumably team leaders to solve the problem.
Jackson, 31, has been out of the NFL after finishing up last season with the Chargers.
Williams hasn’t played well in the last four games, all against struggling defenses, and hasn’t established enough of a track record to brush it aside as a slump.
