Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson will miss “a few weeks” with a leg injury he suffered while training this offseason, general manager Ryan Poles said Tuesday.
The Bears put the two-time Pro Bowl player on the non-football injury list Saturday, alongside three others, but did not specify his malady then. The NFI is reserved for players who are hurt or fall ill away from the team.
Poles claimed the Bears are “not overly concerned” about the long-term impact of Johnson’s injury.
“We’ve got a lot of faith that he’s going to put in the time to rehab and be his full self when he comes back …” Poles said. “It’s going to take a little bit of time.”
Poles delivered updates but didn’t take questions about Johnson or any other subject Tuesday, a break from recent Bears tradition.
Bears veterans reported to training camp on Tuesday. The team will practice for the first time Wednesday.
Speaking on “The Rich Eisen Show” earlier last week, Johnson went out of his way to point out the lucrative contracts signed by his fellow NFL cornerbacks and wondered aloud if it was time to talk to Poles about a new deal. Johnson signed his four-year, $76 million contract extension just 16 months ago.
The Bears signed cornerback Tre Flowers, a seven-year veteran played four games with the Jaguars and one with the Colts last year, to help backfill the position.
