Bears TE Cole Kmet begs Soldier Field fans to cooperate when team is on offense

Late in the Bears’ 27-7 win over the Eagles on Monday, with the game well in hand, tight end Cole Kmet was waving frantically to the raucous crowd at Soldier Field to quiet down. He and his teammates could barely hear quarterback Case Keenum over the roar.

He’d love to see them make life that difficult for opposing offenses, but he pleaded — unprompted — for a little more cooperation when the Bears have the ball.

“P.S.A. to the fans: They need to be quiet when we’re on offense,” Kmet said. “It is ridiculous. It’s insane. I appreciate the energy, but take note from Minnesota how quiet it is when their guys are on offense.”

When Kmet and some other teammates tried signaling to the crowd to quiet down, it had no effect.

“I mean, I love the enthusiasm,” he said. “You can be as loud as you want on defense. It’s just that we’re trying to communicate and get off on the cadence and it’s hard to do that when the fans screaming on third-and-short. But it’s all good. I appreciate it.”

He’s hoping they’ll get on board Sunday when the Bears host the Jets.

Overall, it’s a good problem to have considering how lackluster the crowds were — with good reason — early in his career during the Matt Nagy and Matt Eberflus eras. The Bears no longer are getting booed off the field by their home crowd, but there appears to have been an overcorrection.
