Bears first-round pick Colston Loveland will begin the start of training camp but will likely require a ramp-up period, Poles said.
Head coach Ben Johnson said that Loveland spent more time inside Halas Hall rehabbing than any other player on the team.
The Bears drafted Loveland 10th overall knowing he would need six months to recover from the shoulder surgery he had in January. He did not participate in offseason activities on the field, although he did classroom work to try to learn Ben Johnson’s playbook.
“I’m just blown away by how he approaches everything,” Johnson said. “I don’t think there’s a guy I saw in the building more this summer than him and it’s really a credit to who he wants to be, as he’s attacking the rehab hard. He wants to be a factor here this fall.”

Like Loveland, left tackle Braxton Jones will start training camp on the active roster but could require a ramp up. He’s recovering from ankle surgery after he was hurt against the Lions in December.
Johnson described the competition at left tackle as a three-way battle between Jones, who’s started 40 career games; second-round pick Ozzy Trapilo; and 2024 third-rounder Kiran Amegadjie. Right tackle Darnell Wright will not move to the left side.
“I would like to think [Jones’] experience will help him, but we’re coming in with blank slates right now,” Johnson said.
