Bicyclist hit by driver in Palo Alto dies from injuries

PALO ALTO — A bicyclist who was hit by a driver earlier this month in Palo Alto died Wednesday of his injuries, police said.

The collision happened around 12:20 p.m. on Oct. 4 in the 3400 block of Foothill Expressway, near Hillview Avenue, according to the Palo Alto Police Department.

An initial investigation determined the bicyclist, a man in his 80s, was traveling southbound in the bicycle lane when he moved into the traffic lanes and was hit by a 2022 Mercedes-Benz, police said.

The bicyclist suffered a major head injury in the crash, police said, adding that he was wearing a helmet at the time. He was taken to an area hospital, where he later died.

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the man’s identity after it is confirmed and his next of kin is notified.

The driver, a person in their 90s, stopped at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, according to police.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but police do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role.
