The young Big Bear Lake bald eagle made the bold move Saturday morning, June 7 — days after her sister Sunny took her first flight Monday, June 2.
The big moment came on the day Gizmo turned 13 weeks old, according to the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley.
It wasn’t necessarily pretty.
After stretching and flapping her wings, Gizmo tried to get to another branch in the tree overlooking Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains.
“… but whoops, she didn’t quite make it,” states a Facebook post by Friends of Big Bear Valley, which runs web cams on life in the eagles’ nest that have captivated thousands of viewers a day. “And as she re-landed, her foot slipped and she ended up stepping off the balcony.”
Having accidentally stepped off a branch, the young eagle then flew to a nearby tree at 8:27 a.m.
“She may not have totally chosen that moment on purpose to fledge … but she recovered fast,” the post states.
Gizmo stayed on the tree for at least an hour.
“That first flight is an intense experience and Gizmo may stay put for a while to reorient and figure out what’s next … just like Sunny did, hanging out where she landed for the rest of that day.”
After the first flight, Shadow, the eagle’s father, flew over to the tree and sat on a limb above Gizmo, “keeping an eye on her,” the post states.
Sunny’s journey came Monday morning near 11 a.m., when she took a few careful steps, spread her wings and soared away. Her whereabouts aren’t clear, but she was heard Friday, June 6, according to the post.
Gizmo stayed beyond. Until Saturday.
