A body has been found in the Italian Alps in the search for missing British hiker Matthew Hall.

The 33-year-old, from Hull, disappeared last Wednesday while walking in the Lombardy region of northern Italy.

The discovery of a body was made yesterday evening close to the Cross of Daloo, a mountain viewpoint high above the town of Chiavenna, where Matthew had been staying.

His family have been informed.

Italian authorities said the body was found in a crevice in the same area where he had sent his last text telling a friend he had taken a wrong turn and was having a rest.

A helicopter was brought in to assist with the recovery because of the danger involved in reaching the body.

Friends, family and colleagues had travelled to the area in search for him while specialist drones were also launched.

His friend Scott Hamilton previously spoke to Metro about the search effort and the hopes they would find him.

His mum arrived in Italy on Wednesday and his dad is due to fly out on Friday.

Matthew started his solo hiking trip on July 5 and was due to fly back from Milan to Manchester on July 12.

Friends and family said that he was a confident walker with knowledge of mountains and rugged terrain.

Owners at the B&B Ploncher where Matthew was staying at noticed he didn’t have his breakfast in the days after his arrival in Italy but they assumed he left early for hikes.

When he did not check out on July 11 concern was then raised.

On July 12, B&B staff entered his room and found his personal belongings and documents inside but not his backpack.

A search was then launched by the authorities on July 13 which involved the Alpine Rescue team, the Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza.

An FCDO spokesperson told Metro: ‘We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Italy and are in contact with the local authorities.’
