A 13-year-old boy was in custody after a 15-year-old boy was shot Tuesday afternoon outside a community center in south suburban Matteson.
Around 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, officers and paramedics responded to the Matteson Community Center, 20642 Matteson Ave., and found the boy inside with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, Matteson police said.
He was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition, officials said.
According to preliminary information, there was an altercation between the boy and alleged shooter moments before the shooting outside the community center.
The 15-year-old rushed inside for help while the shooter fled the scene, officials said.
Authorities took the younger teen into custody about two hours later in Richton Park after a brief foot pursuit, police said.
Charges have not been announced.
The community center was closed Tuesday but was expected to reopen Wednesday, officials said. Police believe there is no threat to the community.
