A 15-year-old boy died days after a Labor Day weekend shooting in Ashburn on the Southwest Side.
Enrique Gomez and a 43-year-old man were struck by gunfire around 3:10 a.m. Sept. 1 in the 8200 block of South Saint Louis Avenue, Chicago police said.
Gomez was struck in the head and was taken to the Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was pronounced dead at 9:16 a.m. Sept. 5, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
The man was grazed in the nose and taken to the same hospital where he was in good condition, police said.
A fundraiser launched to help with funeral expenses for Gomez has raised over $5,300 as of 9:20 a.m. Friday.
“He was the light in the tunnel for so many of us — always finding a way to make people laugh, even in the hardest times,” Gomez’s cousin wrote on the fundraiser’s page. “He liked to act tough, but deep down, he had the biggest heart and cared deeply for his family and friends.”
“We are heartbroken and still wishing this could all be a bad dream. Losing him so suddenly has left a hole in our hearts that can never be filled.”
No one was in custody as of Friday morning.
