Michele Bourda vanished at around lunchtime on Friday

An urgent search is underway for a British tourist who vanished from a beach in northern Greece.

Michele Bourda, 59, disappeared from a sunbed on Ofrynio beach in the city of Kavala, while her husband was sleeping.

He told Greek police that he had drifted off on the beach bar loungers, but when he woke up, she was not with him.

Michele’s personal belongings – her clothes and her bag – were there, still next to her chair, local media have reported.

Greece’s Hellenic Coast Guard confirmed that a search operation via sea is currently underway.

The incident happened on Friday, but so far police have been unable to trace the tourist.

As a result, a Silver Alert was issued by the charity LifeLine Hellas, saying that Michele’s life is ‘in danger.’

The public notification system is triggered about missing adults, especially those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, to help locate them safely.

The alert said: ‘Her life is in danger. If you know anything, contact the silver alert service, 24 hours a day, on the national SOS line 1065.’

Michele is described as having straight blonde hair down to her shoulders, hazel eyes, is 5ft 6in tall.

At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a two-piece swimsuit embellished rhinestones, yellow beach shoes and red bone-rimmed sunglasses.
