SAN FRANCISCO — First-round draft pick Cameron Carr had 19 points in his summer debut, but the Lakers were routed by the Golden State Warriors’ Gold squad, 104-72, in the California Classic opener for both teams on Friday night at the Chase Center.
The Warriors outscored the Lakers 29-10 in the second quarter, led by as much as 37 points and never by less than 20 after halftime. Golden State shot 63% from the field (39 for 62) and 16 for 26 from 3-point range (62%), while the Lakers shot just 38% overall (26 for 68) and 23% (7 for 31) from behind the arc.
The Warriors (1-0) had 32 assists, while the Lakers (0-1) had just 16 to go with 12 turnovers.
Carr, a former Baylor standout, shot 7 for 15 overall and 5 for 11 from 3-point range while grabbing two rebounds in nearly 24 minutes, but he was the only Lakers starter to score in double figures. Arthur Kaluma had 12 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots off the bench, while second-year wing Adou Thiero contributed nine points on 3-for-10 shooting to go with four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 21 minutes.
The Warriors were led by their first-round pick, former Michigan standout Yaxel Lendeborg, who finished with 19 points, five rebounds and six assists and made all six of his shots from the field.
Will Richard added 16 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Chance McMillian led the Warrior reserves with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Lakers have Saturday off then have two more games in San Francisco to close out the California Classic. They face the Miami Heat on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. before facing the San Antonio Spurs on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
After that, they head to Las Vegas for the league-wide NBA Summer League that runs from July 9-19.
