‘Sock Talk’ rocks
Westmont High School student Aksol Corona was on the team from the Silicon Valley Career Technical Education (SVCTE) center’s Film and Video Production program that took second place in this year’s Santa Clara County Viral Video Public Service Contest.
Corona, along with Angelo Idanan from Silver Creek High School in East Side Union High School District and Saul Sanchez Barajas from Macdonald High School in Santa Clara Unified School District, placed for their video “Sock Talk!”
The contest was held in recognition of Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Awareness Week, held April 13-19, and was presented by the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health Sexual Health and Harm Reduction Program. “Sock Talk!” was among the 30- to 90-second videos produced and submitted by high-school-age students living or attending school in Santa Clara County that encouraged safer sex behavior and addressed STI stigma. All videos were uploaded to YouTube.
Cash prizes were awarded to the top three teams—$1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second, and $500 for third—along with $500 for each winning team’s school.
Building a volunteer base
Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley is looking for volunteers to help on National Rebuilding Day on Saturday, April 26.
Project site volunteers are needed to help repair and maintain clients’ homes. These clients are primarily low-income veterans and older adults, families with young children and residents with disabilities.
Rebuilding Together is also looking for photographers to capture the progress at each project site, and warehouse volunteers are needed for various tasks before, during and after Rebuilding Day.
In 2024 Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley engaged 1,116 volunteers who donated 10,990 hours to perform repairs on 256 homes and two nonprofit facilities.
