A fire possibly caused by a candle ignited Friday morning in an apartment in Reseda, killing a pet cat, sending one person to a hospital and causing more than five dozen tenants to be displaced.
The blaze was reported about 7:35 a.m. Friday on the 18700 block of Vanowen Street, west of Reseda Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Eighty-nine firefighters responded and doused the flames in under 45 minutes, according to the LAFD, which reported that the fire extended from the unit where it started to the one above it.
The nature and extent of the hospitalized person’s injuries was not disclosed.
A candle is suspected as the cause of the fire, an LAFD spokeswoman said.
The Red Cross was summoned to assist at least 67 tenants displaced from 20 impacted units in the building, she said.
