Chicago warming centers open amid cold snap, though just one keeps its doors open through the weekend

Several city warming centers opened Friday morning as colder temperatures gripped the area, though only one will operate through the weekend.

Anyone looking to stay warm can visit nearly 180 locations, including the city’s five warming centers, which open when the temperature drops below 32 degrees, that will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. A sixth city warming shelter, the Garfield Community Center at 10 S. Kedzie Ave., will remain open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the weekend.

The forecast high for Saturday is 25 degrees as the wind chill earlier dropped to zero, which will continue to happen throughout the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures are expected to rise slowly through Wednesday, which is forecast for a high of 39 degrees.

Residents can call 311 to find a nearby warming center. A full list of citywide warming centers can be found on the city’s official website.
