Clear Creek water restrictions lifted in Jefferson County as water levels drop

The temporary ban on popular water activities was lifted Tuesday from Clear Creek as water levels in the area dropped, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

High water levels in early June prompted authorities to issue safety restrictions for Clear Creek, prohibiting belly boats, inner tubes, single-chambered rafts, body surfing and swimming.

Jefferson County Sheriff Reggie Marinelli and Golden city officials lifted those restrictions, which extended from JeffCo’s western boundary through Golden’s eastern limits, at noon on Tuesday.

Still, the sheriff’s office said people should remain cautious on Clear Creek.

The water temperature, blasted and undercut rocks, trees, root systems, fencing and guardrails can all be dangerous, sheriff’s officials said Wednesday on X.

People who plan to visit Clear Creek should keep an eye on pets and children, who will be quickly swept away if they fall in unexpectedly, sheriff’s officials said.

“If someone does fall in the water, do not go in after them,” sheriff’s officials said. “Keep an eye on them as best you can and follow them downstream along the bank until rescue crews can arrive. You can try to reach the person from the shore with a branch or rope, but not at the risk of falling in yourself.”

Lifejackets, helmets and water shoes are recommended for all activities in Clear Creek, sheriff’s officials said.
