Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Tuesday, “Canada will match the new U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar. In addition, we are introducing $7.5 billion in new and enhanced measures to support Canadian workers and businesses. That builds on the nearly $25 billion in supports introduced since the implementation of the U.S. [sic].”
MAGA-aligned U.S. Representative Brandon Gill (R-TX) responded to Carney, writing: “Your entire nation has a lower annual GDP than Texas. You need us a lot more than we need you. CCP Carney would rather plunge his nation into poverty than negotiate with President Trump.”

[NOTE: Canada’s annual GDP is approximately $2.42 trillion USD ($3.32 trillion CAD) for 2026. Texas’s annual GDP reached a record high of $2.904 trillion in 2025. Canada’s population is 41 million; Texas’s is 32 million.]
One of President Trump’s most vocal critics, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, spoke about the tariffs and trade negotiations on Monday. Clinton said: “I can’t imagine that even in the Republican cloakroom in the Senate, there’s much enthusiasm for going into a trade war with Canada.”

Clinton said that nearly 60 percent of Michigan’s exports and 40 percent of Ohio’s exports go to Canada. “I can’t imagine that the Republicans in those states, or literally anywhere in the country, are enthusiastic about this nonsense that [President] Trump is promoting, and probably secretly cheering Mark Carney for standing up to him and doing what he’s now doing on behalf of his country.”
[NOTE: The Office of the United States Trade Representative reported Ohio’s “largest export market was Canada. Ohio exported $17.5 billion in goods to Canada in 2025, representing 31 percent of the state’s total goods exports.” The same source said “Michigan exported $21.2 billion in goods to Canada in 2025, representing 36 percent of the state’s total goods exports.”]
