Compton celebrates 70th annual Christmas Parade — with The Game serving as grand marshal

What started as a local community gathering in 1955 has grown over the past seven decades into a landmark holiday event — one that draws thousands of spectators to Compton each December.

The 70th Annual Compton Christmas Parade took place Saturday, Dec. 13, along Compton Boulevard, from Bullis Road to Alameda Street.

The parade celebrated its platinum anniversary by having one of the city’s iconic sons serve as grand marshal: Compton native Jayceon Taylor — better known as rapper The Game.

Serving as grand marshal was a full-circle homecoming moment for the Grammy Award-nominated artist, he said in an announcement on the city’s website.

“Compton isn’t just where I’m from; it’s what made me who I am, shaped my music and drives everything I do,” The Game said in the announcement. “It’s the fire behind every bar and why I keep grinding and giving back; being grand marshal this year feels like coming full circle.”

Locals and visitors alike lined the streets early Saturday afternoon to watch floats, marching bands, dance groups, classic cars, representatives from community organizations and many more roll and stroll by to spread holiday cheer.

The Compton Cowboys, a group of Black equestrians rooted in the city, rode their horses down the 2-mile parade route — serving as a symbol of the town’s history and spirit.

Attending the parade has become a yearly tradition for local families. Over the decades, it has continued strengthening community pride and reflecting the resilience of Compton, the city’s website says. Generations of residents have grown up attending the parade, making it an integral part of the Compton’s identity.

“The Compton Christmas Parade is a celebration of our city’s unity, culture and pride,” Compton Mayor Emma Sharif said in the announcement, adding she thrilled to see the tradition reach its 70th milestone.

Following the parade, the city hosted a toy drive and concert at Wilson Park, featuring a performance by R&B singer Jon B, as well as food and bounce houses.
