Cooling system at Cal State LA fails during heat wave

With blistering heat blanketing Southern California, Cal State Los Angeles on the east side of the city was under modified operations Friday, with all classes and operations that can be conducted remotely occurring off campus through the weekend because of a cooling system failure.

Fall classes started Monday Aug. 24.

Faculty was directed on Thursday to move classes to remote instruction if possible, according to university announcements.

Campus housing and the financial aid office in the Student Services Building were operating as normal, according to school officials.

“The campus chilled-water system is operating at reduced capacity because of an equipment failure affecting cooling across campus,” according to a university statement. “Repairs are expected to be completed over the weekend.”

Cooling campus housing was being prioritized with remaining existing capacity, according to Cal State LA.
