The CIF Southern Section Northern Individual boys golf regional took place Wednesday, and multiple area golfers did well enough to qualify for next week’s CIF-SS Individual Final.
Crespi senior Grant Leary won the regional at Los Robles Greens Golf Course in Thousand Oaks with a 6-under 64. He started off strong, shooting 5-under through the front nine that included an eagle on the par-4 ninth.
“It was just about staying true to my process,” said Leary about his fast start.
After staying atop the leaderboard for most of the afternoon, Leary was able to clinch the win with a closing birdie on the 18th hole, his sixth birdie of the round.
Leary will look to earn his second straight CIF Southern Section individual championship May 21 after carding a 66 to win in 2025.
His focus remains on that upcoming final even with a US Open qualifying tournament coming up in early June.
“I know that I’m in a really good spot with my game,” he said about his mindset going into the Southern Section final.
Seven other area golfers were able to finish inside the Top 20 and advance to the CIF-SS final along with Leary.
St. Francis freshman Greyson Graham finished tied for second place with a 4-under 64. He had a late surge that included four birdies in his last five holes.
Chaminade senior Noah Scavo shot a largely steady round as he carded just one bogey all day on his way to a 3-under 67, good enough to tie for sixth place.
Crescenta Valley freshman Nathan Lee led the regional early by shooting 3-under through his first six holes. But he carded a bogey and double bogey on consecutive holes to move back to even par.
After those missteps, Lee found his range again with a bogey-free back nine and three more birdies to finish tied for sixth at 3-under par.
Simi Valley junior Nathan Corlew finished tied for 10th place with a 2-under 68. His round started with a birdie and a bogey on the par-5 14th hole and par-4 15th holes, respectively, and his work on the par-5 first proved to be his best of the day.
The first hole, Corlew’s sixth of the day, ended with an eagle that put him at 2-under.
Three birdies followed later in the round, and that cushion was enough to withstand a double bogey and a bogey on his 15th and 17th holes, respectively.
Westlake senior Sammy Bermant’s consistent back nine helped him rebound from a shaky start that had him sitting on the “cut line” at even par. A pair of birdies on his 10th and 14th holes led to him to finish in a tie for 12th place at 1-under.
Bishop Montgomery freshman Gavin Gutshall and Newbury Park junior Aidan Peters both finished at even par to advance, their score proving to be right on the “cut line” to move on to the individual final.
Gutshall’s clutch birdie on his 16th hole of the round was the shot that continued his individual season, while Peters recorded two birdies in his first three holes.
