DIA ground stop for severe thunderstorms delays hundreds of flights

Hundreds of Denver International Airport flights were delayed Saturday after severe thunderstorms grounded all airplanes for over an hour.

Federal Aviation Administration officials ordered a DIA ground stop at 2:40 p.m. because of the storms. The ground stop is set to expire at 5 p.m.

A ground delay is causing average flight delays of more than an hour, according to the agency. Arriving flights are delayed by an average of 30 minutes.

Nearly 500 flights were delayed or canceled as of 3:45 p.m. Saturday, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.

Of the 483 delays, 173 were reported on Southwest Airlines, 121 on United and 106 on SkyWest. Ten DIA flights were canceled.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
