SEATTLE — Sky guard DiJonai Carrington’s night ended after just three minutes Saturday. The story it started figures to run considerably longer.
Minutes after she was ejected from the game against the Fever for a Flagrant 2 foul on Indiana guard Sophie Cunningham, Carrington posted “WHITE PRIVILEGE” on Threads and tagged the Fever.
Sky coach Tyler Marsh said he learned of the post only when asked about it after the game.
“I have to get back to you on that because I’m just now hearing about that,” Marsh said. “So, we’ll handle that.”
Carrington was not made available to reporters after the game, but she and Marsh will get questions Monday when the Sky play the Storm. The WNBA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Cunningham said she thought Carrington’s foul was intentional and done for attention. She said in response to the Threads post:
“I think the league is taking care of that. This has nothing to do with race. Last year I did the same thing. I got kicked out, as I deserved to be kicked out. There’s no reason to even play that card.”
Last season, Cunningham committed a similar flagrant foul against Sky guard Jacy Sheldon in defense of Caitlin Clark. Cunningham acknowledged the parallel but said Carrington had “no reason” to get involved.
Before the game, Sheldon told the Sun-Times that Cunningham’s flagrant foul from last season didn’t stick with her.
“We don’t focus on it,” Sheldon said. “We don’t care about it. We focus on the scout, to be honest.”
Sky center Elizabeth Williams recalled Sheldon getting booed when the Sky played the Fever in Indiana.
“Which I’m like, ‘Wow, we’re booing Jacy?'” Williams said. “But no, I mean, we joke about it, but nothing serious. We’re always going to have our teammates’ backs.”
