Dolores Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers union to improve working conditions in the nation’s fruit and vegetable fields.
She coined the phrase “Sí, se puede!” that became a widespread rallying cry in the 1960s, and the civil rights work she established then, continued her entire life.
Huerta died Wednesday, Oct. 28 at her home. She was 96.

One of the best-known leaders in the decades-long struggle for US farm laborer rights, Dolores Huerta may be 95 years old but she is busier than ever. With the Trump administration ramping up immigration raids targeting farmworkers, the veteran activist — who co-founded the country’s largest agricultural union more than 60 years ago — is a galvanizing figure for those seeking to fight back.
