A Dolton man was killed, and four people are in custody Thursday, including a woman who was hospitalized after the shooting at Oakbrook Center mall, according to Oak Brook police.
Justin Hill, 28, and of Dolton, was dead on the scene of the Wednesday morning attack, according to police, who said two males and one female, remain in custody at the Oak Brook police station while a woman who was hospitalized was also in custody, police said.
Her condition, at a local medical facility, was not disclosed but police said an officer has been assigned to assist with security there as the investigation progresses.
Earlier, at a Wednesday afternoon news conference, Oak Brook police chief Brian Strockis said that around noon, two vehicles pulled into the parking lot outside the mall’s LL Bean store, where an altercation occurred before occupants inside fired several shots.
Police were able to find another vehicle involved in the shooting by using license plate reader cameras in Oak Brook. Occupants of that car were taken into custody for questioning in neighboring Oakbrook Terrace.
Strockis said it was still unclear what motivated the meetup or the shooting, though the department expects to release more information about the investigation.
In an earlier statement posted on social media, Oak Brook police said the mall remained open despite the earlier heavy police presence, as several agencies responded to the scene.
“Oakbrook Center is and will remain the premier shopping destination in the Midwest, and the safety of everyone who lives, works, and visits here remains our highest priority,” Strockis said.
