A ‘major incident’ has reportedly been declared at an M&S store after a suspected carbon monoxide leak this morning.
Emergency services rushed to the shop in Carlton, south-east London, after an alarm was raised.
Terrified shoppers were reportedly rushed out of the store.
Greenwich councillor David Gardner shared the ‘major incident’ on Facebook, saying that 35 people were being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning after the incident.
In a later update, he said no customers were affected but more than 40 staff were.
Six of the staff members are undergoing tests in hospital, with no injuries thought to be life-threatening, he shared.
‘The store may remain closed for a couple of days while the leak is rectified and assured all safe,’ he continued.
Strategic Commander for the London Ambulance Service said: ‘We were called at 9.32am today (16 December) to reports of an incident on Gallions Road, Charlton.
‘We have sent a number of resources to the scene, including both conventional ambulance resources, specialist assets such as our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and Advanced Paramedic Practitioners.’
