Driver crashes into steps of L.A. City Hall, surrenders after standoff

A driver who crashed into the steps of Los Angeles’ City Hall and barricaded himself in the car has surrendered to police.

Just before 6 p.m., the man got out of his car and walked with his hands behind his head, southbound down Broadway towards First Street, where police officers detained him without incident.

Hours earlier, at 4:08 p.m., the LA Police Department responded to a call about a traffic collision and found the car on the steps of City Hall near Broadway and south of First Street in downtown LA.

The man had two signs on the dashboard of the car that said, “Don’t want to hurt no body,” and “I need ur help D Trump U.S. Vet,” according to KTLA 5.

The gray-haired man came out of the car wearing a Pink Floyd “The dark side of the moon” t-shirt.

“I’ve been briefed on the ongoing incident outside of City Hall, which is currently being evacuated out of an abundance of caution. I want to thank all first responders who are at the scene — my office will continue to monitor the situation,” Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement.

The area near Grand Park was placed under evacuation as a precaution. Spring Street in front of City Hall was expected to remain closed before police could inspect the interior of the car, CBS TV reported.
