Drivers face five-mile queues near Stansted after multi-vehicle crash

Motorists have been caught in traffic mayhem on the M11 near Stansted Airport after two multi-vehicle crashes.

Friday traffic is in a gridlock on the motorway north of Stansted after the back-to-back collisions today.

Drivers are being held in both directions between J10 Royston and J9 Newmarket after a serious multi-vehicle crash, with delays building up in the area.

Earlier, two lanes were closed southbound between junction J9 Newmarket and J8 Stansted Airport following another multi-vehicle crash.

The emergency services are on the scene, and vehicle recovery has been arranged.

However, delays are building up, with stationary traffic snarling back for five miles towards Cambridgeshire.

This is causing 45-minute delays on approach, National Highways warned.

Metro has approached the emergency services for a comment.

Elsewhere, drivers on the M1 also face long delays after a broken-down lorry has blocked the motorway.

The lorry brakes locked on, making it unable to be moved.

The incident happened between J11 near Luton and Luton Airport, causing 60-minute delays in the area.
