DuSable Lake Shore Drive Bridge closing overnight for maintenance a week after getting stuck

The DuSable Lake Shore Drive Bridge will be closed for overnight maintenance a week after the bridge spent over four hours stuck during a routine lift in extreme heat last week.

The closures are expected from 10 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday and Tuesday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation.

The closures are in place in order for crews to conduct work in preparation for the fall boat run season, which includes maintenance “intended to help reduce the likelihood of the issue experienced last week,” the department said.

On Sept. 2, the bridge was stuck for more than four hours after a routine lift around 10 a.m. to let a yacht pass.

Crews spent hours trying to close the bridge completely. A Chicago Fire Department boat sprayed water to cool it down on Wednesday, which was Chicago’s second day under a heat advisory.
