Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke’s top aide stepped down Monday, less than a year into her tenure.
O’Neill Burke credited the resigning First Assistant State’s Attorney Anna Demacopoulos’ “tireless efforts on behalf of the people of Cook County” in an email to her staff.
“Anna Demacopoulos stepped away from a thriving private practice in order to utilize her legal expertise to help stabilize the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office and implement innovative and needed restructuring,” O’Neill Burke wrote of the former judge and prosecutor. “Now that those restructures are complete, Anna is resigning her position as First Assistant and returning to her private practice.”
In a statement late Monday, Demacopoulos said she was “proud of the progress we have made together in strengthening our mission, pursuing justice with integrity, and supporting the communities we serve. While I will be transitioning back into the private sector, I know that my colleagues will continue to build on this great progress.”
She added: “It has been the highest honor of my career to serve the people of Cook County and to work alongside the dedicated attorneys, investigators, and staff of the State’s Attorney’s Office.”
Demacopoulos previously spent 15 years as a circuit court judge in Cook County and more than 20 years as a prosecutor in the state’s attorney’s office.
